Recently, Media Reported About A Huge Climate Change Movement Led By Teenage Girls That Has Been Sweeping Europe. Now You Can Learn About the Movement That Has Been Here Long Before The European Movement Behind the Scenes.

Jamie Margolin, the 17-year-old founder and executive director of Zero Hour, the group that laid the groundwork and helped get the climate strike movement started, said recently that climate activism has given young women like her a chance to be heard. Global Leader Today recently caught up with Jamie and had a chance to ask her a few questions...

What made you think that one person could make a difference when you started out?
I wasn’t totally sure one person could make a difference, and but I was and am only one person, so I had to work with what I could control — myself!  So I chose to take action knowing that my actions and community organizing would spur others to act, and when the masses come together it pressures those in power to change.

How did you put together such a dynamic team?
The vision was clear from the beginning. We were a diverse young women of color led movement with a strong message of “This Is Zero Hour” to act on climate change — so those who agreed with and believed with that vision join the team. To form such a dynamic powerhouse team like the Zero Hour team is,     you need to have a clear and strong vision and those who believe in it will join you.

What advice would you give to their young people around the world who notice something around them, or in the world, that they’d like to change?

Don’t wait for anyone’s permission and don’t expect someone to pull a seat up at the table for you. No one is going to give you a seat at the table so you have to step up and make yourself heard. Don’t wait for external validation — do your research, gather people who also believe the problem should be fixed, roll up your sleeves and get to work.
